JOHN LAWRENCE “LARRY” CALDWELL

$

It is with broken hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, John Lawrence "Larry" Caldwell, on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at the home of his fiancé in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Larry was born on December 7, 1950, in Orlando, Florida to Fred and Mildred Caldwell. He is predeceased by his parents and survived by his fiancé, Elizabeth Gayle Broadfield, his big sister, Nanci Faulkner (Jay) and his twin sister, Laura Hyde (Glenn Smith). Larry referred to his sisters as his "S'MOTHERS" and we DID smother him with love and attention. Larry is also survived by his nephew, Tom Hyde, his niece, Nancy Hyde (Omar Perez) and great nephew, Ray Carlos Perez, his uncle, Damon Lawrence of Bartow, Florida, many numerous cousins, and his angel caregiver, "the wizard" Lucy Ferguson.
Larry graduated from Fletcher High School in the class of 1968. He attended the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and graduated from JU. While at UF, he was a member of the SAE fraternity and sweetheart of the Tri Delta sorority. It was while in Gainesville that he met his college sweetheart, Gayle. He also held membership in the Northeast Florida Marlin Association and Ducks Unlimited. He had over 100 hours of volunteer service at the Gabriel House of Care at the Mayo Clinic. He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church where he worshipped as his health permitted. He especially enjoyed the coffee and donut time between church services where he would eat a chocolate iced donut as his sisters glared at him, knowing he was not supposed to be eating them.
After college, Larry was employed in the emergency department of Beaches Hospital, as an EMT, for seven years. He enjoyed helping the nurses and doctors so much and gained a wealth of knowledge concerning patient care which he always remembered. Larry later became a stockbroker and worked in downtown Jacksonville for Blackstock and Company. After a few years there, Larry became very interested in motor yachts and sports fishing boats and became a yacht broker, working in Jacksonville at Roger Hansen Yacht Sales and at Beach Marine. He then took a position with HMY yacht sales in Ft Lauderdale, a place he dearly loved and worked hard in the boating business for many years there. He was highly recognized for his expertise in the boating world and received many accolades, awards and trips because of his high boat sales and business acumen.
Larry was a man of many interests and tastes. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed ocean fishing...well, catching was preferred to fishing...he loved to teach others how to make rigs, and gaff the huge game fish into the boat. He was happiest in the early morning in a duck blind. He was an accomplished archer and loved bow hunting. He enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips to other locales with his buddies. Larry had a vast library of reading materials and he and mother both enjoyed a crossword puzzle, many times finishing each other's words. He loved to sketch with pen and ink and lettered in calligraphy beautifully. He enjoyed the TV show "Forged in Steel" and collected hand forged knives with Damascus blades. He had an uncanny knowledge of WWII military facts and figures. Being born on Pearl Harbor Day made him an instant enthusiast for wartime history. He knew the names of every ship, aircraft and general in the military and could recount air and ground battles. He looked forward to living in the Virginia hills surrounded by Civil War battle sites. He enjoyed building model airplanes and has many models still today that he built in his earlier years. Larry LOVED to eat all types of food with an international flair for Philippine lumpia and pancit, Japanese sushi, Thai cuisine, Peruvian ceviche and always enjoyed a thick steak on the grill. He absolutely had a zest for living and living large!
While living in Ft. Lauderdale, Larry was diagnosed with colon cancer and spent many months of chemo and radiation therapy. At this time, he moved back to Ponte Vedra Beach to help care for his aging mother. Larry survived colon cancer for over thirty years, but while living back home, was diagnosed as an adult with diabetes. His diabetic condition worsened until he was made to retire from his adored profession of yacht sales, when diagnosed with end stage renal disease. Because of this diagnosis he endured kidney dialysis three times a week for many years. Due to continuing health issues he was dropped from the kidney transplant program at Mayo Clinic. That being a great disappointment, he was still determined to carry on as complete and joyful a life as he could.
SO...in the late summer of 2017, Larry saw an advertisement to connect with someone from the past. Taking a chance, he tried to contact Gayle, his college sweetheart of 47 years ago!! After finding her and talking on the phone for days on end, he flew to meet her in Virginia. The spark was rekindled and after visiting her at Christmas, Larry asked Gayle to marry him! They were planning to be married in Jacksonville Beach on May 5th of this year, and then live in their home in Virginia. Unfortunately that union will never be, but Larry and Gayle felt like they were already blessed to be together as life partners. Larry was the happiest we have ever known him when he was with his beloved. He was completely whole when they were together. It was there, in their home, the home he would share with his bride, that he lived his last day. He adored Gayle, the short time he had with the love of his life, and his spirit is with her today.
A memorial service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church in Atlantic Beach at 2pm on Saturday, February 17th with reception to follow. A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at The Ritz Bar in Jacksonville Beach after the reception.
Because of his and Gayle's love for dogs, we are asking that if you wish to make a contribution to his life and this endless love story, please send it to the following: Katlin Daley, Director Fredericksburg Area Regional SPCA, 10819 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22408. Reference Larry Caldwell
Thank you for loving our brother Nanci and Laura.
