David Garrett Whittle was called to his heavenly home with the Lord Jesus on Monday January 15, 2018, after a period of illness, at age of 78.
David was born and raised in Huntington, WV. Preceding David in death were his  grandparents Clarence M. Whittle and Mary "Mollie" Alice Withers – Whittle, four aunts; Mary Elizabeth "Bill" Whittle - Lambert, Virginia "Gin" Alice Whittle - Kelly, Clarice Ruth Whittle and Hilda Catherine Whittle – Shy and his beloved mother, Marjorie Louise Whittle “Margie” as David called her. Also preceding David in death were two first cousins: Ron Shy and Richard Kelly. David is survived by first cousins: Larry Lambert of Orange City, FL; Terry Shy and Linda Kelly, both of Huntington, WV; Mary Kay Shy of Charlotte, NC; and Mary Ida Speck of St. Petersburg, FL, as well as many special friends and other relatives,
David enlisted in the US Navy in 1963 as a Ship's Serviceman and received an honorable discharge after some 16 years of service. He held the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Award.
At age 44 David received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, it was a radical transformation. He would say he wasted the first half of his life, and he was determined to live the rest of his life for the Lord. He faithfully served as a deacon at several local churches, sharing the gospel every chance he had.  He was bold and unashamed of his passion for Jesus. David especially enjoyed spending long days evangelizing at the Jacksonville Beaches. His unique gift was telling people how much Jesus loved them. He’d say “I love everybody, and I want all to go to heaven”. He was often seen waving to folks on the corner of 3rd Street and Beach Boulevard with a big smile and brimming with joy. One of his scripture signs that David held out there read “Jesus Saves, John 3:16” and “I love you”.
David was a special man whose life touched so many lives and has borne much good fruit for eternity! He will surely be missed.
His burial took place in the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Family and Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Celebration of his life at the Ocean Park Baptist Church, located at 402 16th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach, FL on Saturday January 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM. 11/1/1939-1/29/2018
John “Ray” Holland, Sr., gentleman, deal chaser, grill master, kayaker and avid adventurer, passed away peacefully January 29, 2018. Living life to its fullest, Ray’s boundless enthusiasm and zest for life were only outweighed by his compassionate, giving heart. With an innate desire to help others—friends and strangers alike—Ray’s mantra was to do more than anyone else did, but with a positive attitude and a smile. Whether roaming the great outdoors and camping under the stars, hopping from garage sales, or hosting family gatherings, Ray never met a stranger and was kind to everyone he met. He loved serving his community and was always quick to lend a hand, or anything he had, to anyone in need.
Ray was immensely proud of his blended family and endearingly called them “The Brady Bunch.” He is survived by the love of his life, wife Sheila Shore Holland; sister, Brenda; children and step-children, John (Kathy), Jennifer, Jackie (Jim), Jennifer (Kevin), Winston (Saba) and Steve (Kim); grandchildren, Josh, Amelia, Lauren (Lionel), Ben, Caroline, Christian and Catherine; and great-grandson, John Woolf.
A celebration of Ray’s life will take place on Friday, February 2, 2018, the visitation is at noon, and the funeral service is at 1 pm at Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home, 3600 3rd Street, South, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hartfelt Ministries, www.hartfelt.org, where Ray volunteered by mowing grass for the elderly. Also, in Ray’s honor, the next time you buy something, be sure to haggle for the best price—he would have enjoyed that.

ELISE BUSH

$

After a joyful and inspiring life of 58 years, Elise Bush, of Jacksonville Beach, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2018 at the McGraw Hospice Center. Though a relapse of ovarian cancer took her life, it could not take her unquenchable thirst for living.
Elise was born into the unconditionally loving family of James and Elizabeth Bush in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 27, 1959. When Elise was 8 years old the family moved to Jacksonville and established a home, but few could have imagined the profound impact Elise would have on the community. After helping to lead Fletcher HS to a volleyball Final Four and a basketball State Championship, Elise went on to play at Anderson University (SC) before returning to Jacksonville, where she earned her degree from UNF and became the Head Volleyball Coach at The Bolles School.  From that day forward, “Coach Bush” began to have an inestimable impact upon her players, advisees, and colleagues at Bolles and throughout Northeast Florida.
While the record books will long retain her accomplishments as a coach—nearly 700 wins, 20 Final Four appearances, and a State Championship—Elise’s players will carry with them her passionate intensity, her down-to-earth approach to life, and her deep caring and respect for each person as an individual.  Anyone who entered her sphere of influence quickly grew to respect Elise’s honesty, integrity, and constant encouragement to all to be the best they could be. Not surprisingly, even players who went on to play at the highest levels of intercollegiate volleyball called Elise “the best coach I ever had.”
But what those who are left to mourn her will most remember is Elise’s sheer zest for living. She had an infectious energy and enthusiasm that led others to gravitate to her. On trips abroad or to see her far-flung family in the U.S., or during team meals, dinner parties or cookouts at home, or at her famous Paella Throwdowns, Elise was always the life of the party. Her joyous laughter still peals through our hearts and minds. Even in her final months of suffering from cancer, Elise retained her trademark positivity—an upbeat attitude that should be an example to us all. She was a coach to the end.
Elise was predeceased by her brother James, her brother Dan (Marcia), and her sister Janice. She is survived by her loving spouse, Vicki Gafford; brothers Paul (Scyles), Tom (Cathy), and Gary (Kelly) Bush; and many nephews and nieces whom she adored.
A service celebrating her life will be held in the McGehee Auditorium of the San Jose Campus of The Bolles School at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 17th.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, or The Bolles School. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL.

MARGARET (STILL) HILL

Thanksgiving-day birthday girl Margaret (Still) Hill, known by her friends and family as Mickie, of Duluth, GA and Atlantic Beach, FL, lost her 9-month battle with cancer on January 27, 2018. She was 69 years old, born on November 25, 1948. While she loved having a fall birthday, she had a touch (maybe more than a “touch”) of bitterness over having to share it with that particular holiday. As a child she despised it more so, because who would want their birthday dinner to involve turkey and/or leftovers?
Mickie is survived by her son Shawn, daughter-in-law Ann, granddaughters Casey, Hannah and Lauren, known to her as “the girls,” of Johns Creek, GA, and her brother Rick and his family, Ginger, Heather, Megan and Matthew, of Kingsley Lake, FL.
She loved animals, well really only dogs if being honest, especially her adopted rescued terrier Willow and grand-dog Bear.
She loved the ocean, especially looking for shark’s teeth, had a knack for growing tomatoes, made beautiful stained-glass art, cheered her heart out for Alabama football and made a killer broccoli casserole. She was a vocal critic of bad haircuts for dogs, and hated salmon, gossipers, green peppers, hypocrites, bad waiters, Auburn, and peas, though not necessarily in that order.
Her work focused on doing what she loved rather than the pursuit of money, so she spent 20 years working at Mayport Naval Station in Florida, where she grew up and spent most of her adult life. She also worked several years at Duluth Animal Hospital after relocating to Georgia to be closer to her granddaughters.
She knew most people by the names of their pets rather than their human names. “Oh, you’re Doug the Pug’s Dad; he’s overdue for his heart worm medicine” she might be overheard saying to an unsuspecting passerby in the grocery store.
She was beloved by many and was known as a fiercely loyal friend. One of her favorite things to say was that she spelled her name Mickie “not like the mouse, but like a girl with an I-E on the end.” This nickname was derived when she was young and wanted a different name than her mother, who was also named Margaret. There might also be some truth to the rumor that Mickie was a cute nickname when younger because it rhymed with her older brother “Rickie”, but she’d just assume we forgot about that.
Although she was not Catholic, she was well-known by many parishioners at St. Brigid Catholic Church through her son and his family. A memorial service in her honor will be Thursday, February 8 at the church at 4 p.m. A brief reception at the church’s Corbett Hall to follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, (although she loved white Gerber daisies!), please donate to the Gwinnett Humane Society at www.gwinnetthumane.com.
The address for St. Brigid Catholic Church is 3400 Old Alabama Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30022.
To express condolences, please sign our online guest book at www.flaniganfuneralhome.com. Arrangements By: Junior E. Flanigan of Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Buford, GA (770) 932-1133.
