ROBERT M. STRACHAN SR.

Robert M. Strachan Sr., 95, of Neptune Beach, Florida and Huntington Beach, California, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2018, at home surrounded by his East Coast family. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Harold and Helen Strachan he ventured the world since fighting in World War II and was proud to say he was able to touch all seven continents. His final goal was to survive until his 95th birthday which brought together his family members from the West and East coast, as well as local friends. Bob was, until the end, sharp as a tack, and always a flirt who loved to tell his stories and sing his vast repertoire of songs acapella or on his ukulele.
As late as May 2017 Bob Strachan remained an active driver often making his way from Florida to Maryland and then to Long Island, Rhode Island and Maine to visit his family. He often said that when he could no longer drive he would know the end of his life was near. He wanted to be able to go out of life like his grandfather who, at the age of 98, took a last walk and passed-away doing what he loved most.
You could always count on Bob to have an incredible sunny disposition and a desire to tell a joke, which he inherited from his father. Bob Strachan, to his last day, said he could never imagine a better, more fulfilling life than the one he lived. A lifelong believer in fate, he believed that everything that befell him turned out for the best. He said the choices he made always led to unpredictable happiness, like a chance meeting with a woman named Herta Light with whom he spent 20 years often traveling to new destinations somewhere in the world until Alzheimer's took Herta from him. He was previously married to Leola Elaine Pennock with whom he spent 38 years until her death.
His spirit will live on through his children, each of whom brought him his greatest satisfaction. He was extremely proud of his three sons, Merrill Strachan (deceased) and his wife Sue of Fullerton, California and their children Bob, Tom, Tammy, Jim, Eddie, Rosie, Cassie and Kate; Robert Strachan Jr. and his wife Shirley of Neptune Beach, Florida and their children Darci and Collins; and Glenn Strachan and his partner Jean Preller of Pasadena, Maryland and his children Julian and Isabel as well as his 28 great and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 11am at Christ United Methodist Church in Neptune Beach, Florida followed by a burial of his ashes at Riverside National Cemetery in California. The family asked that in lieu of flowers a donation in the name of Robert Strachan be made to NOMADS, PO Box 3508, Shawnee, KS 66203.
