Eula Rigsby Wood, steadfast in faith, completed her extensive, temporal life journey on December 13, 2018 in Kerrville, Texas at the age of 104 following several years of declining health. She was born September 22, 1914 to John and Irene Rigbsy in Tallassee, Alabama, the second of four girls and three boys. She was preceded in death by her five-year-old son “Doc” in 1940, as well as all of her sisters and brothers. Her surviving family consisting of seven nieces, two nephews, their children and grandchildren mourn Aunt Eula. Considered a dear friend and unofficial family member, she is deeply mourned by the Lanahan family for whom she worked for over 40 years, finishing her career as a Vice President and Comptroller for the Lanahan Lumber Company.
Her professional skills began to grow with her work expertise while one of the Greatest Generation’s Rosie the Riveter defense workers at Savannah Ship Yard during World War II. These experiences molded her work ethic, focus and dedication for the rest of her life. She was a stalwart and enduring presence for all who knew and worked with her. As the last of her generation, Eula will be genuinely missed by all of her family and friends.
She was a resident of Jacksonville Beach and member the First Christian Church, Neptune Beach for over 40 years. Deeply involved in civic organizations, Eula was frequently recognized for her many volunteer efforts in and on various non-profit organizational boards, especially Friends of the University of Jacksonville Library, Friends of the Symphony, The Players Championship and other notable endeavors including a women’s outreach program to South America.
With the passing of most of her friends and colleagues and with little family remaining in Florida, she recently chose to move to Kerrville, TX to be closer to immediate family. This move, unlike many elder relocations, was positive in all aspects. In spite of her declining health and needed hospice care, her demeanor brightened, and she loved her comfortable new living environment. Her outgoing personality resurfaced and her “...goal was to make one new friend a day.” She passed her last days enjoying the company of family members and new friends.
In lieu of flowers, please designate any memorial as a contribution to your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held on January 7, 2019 at 2pm at First Christian of the Beaches, 2125 Ocean Front, Neptune Beach.
