WILMA JEAN CORBITT
Wilma Jean Corbitt passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 8, 2019 in Jacksonville Beach, FL. Wilma was born February 06, 1938 to Raymond and Eleanor Heiman in the Township of Medina near Marshall, WI.
Wilma married her husband Bruce Corbitt on December 14, 1957 in Marshall, WI who preceded her in death on November 23, 2016.
Wilma was known around the beach for owning and operating Corbitt’s Nursery. She also served on the Jacksonville Beach Civil Service Board. Wilma was very active with faithful attendance in her church, Bethlehem Lutheran. One of her proudest accomplishment was helping to establish Bethlehem Lutheran Daycare in 1986.
Wilma met some of her best life long friends while serving as a DOE at the Elks Lodge.
Wilma retired from the Social Security Administration after 30 years of service. Following retirement both she and her husband were able to enjoy many months out of the year in her hometown of Marshall, WI. Family and friends knew she called Florida home, but her heart was always in Wisconsin.
Spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her true joy. She is survived by her sons, Johnny (Debbie) and Steve (Denise); daughters, Cheryl (Shawn) Palmer and Staci (Erik) Hunter; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey Heiman (Donna); brother-in-law, Herman Corbitt; sister-in-law, Erabelle Tiner (Harold); Aunts, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends.
The family will receive visitors at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the funeral service following at 11:00am. Interment will be held in H. Warren Smith Cemetery.

Robert "Bobby" Allen Briggs, 59, of Middlebury, died at 6:53 am, on Friday, January 11, at his residence. His death was unexpected and was due to natural causes. He was born on September 24, 1959, in Sanford, FL, to Harold and Alberta (Buskie) Briggs.
Surviving are a daughter, Heather Briggs of Jacksonville Beach, FL; three sons, Scott (Amanda Holloway) Briggs of Jacksonville Beach, FL, Stephen (Eileen) Bidelman, Robert (Jessica) Bidelman all of Three Rivers, MI; six grandchildren; a brother, Tommy Briggs; his lovable dog, Coco. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Bidelman Briggs and his parents.

Robert “Bob” Franklin Cole, 85, passed away on January 14, 2019. He was born January 13, 1934 in Anderson, SC and was raised in Augusta, GA. He was an active member of Neptune Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and worked with the youth.
Robert graduated from Richmond Academy and the University of South Carolina. He also proudly served our country 3 years in the Air Force as a Navigator.
Bob’s banking career had him employed at Guaranty Federal Savings and Loan as well as an Examiner for Federal Home Loan Bank Board. After retirement, he was a substitute teacher for many local Middle and High Schools. He chaperoned numerous events for Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and was a member of the boosters.
He loved spending time with his tennis friends and running on the beach. He was open and willing to counsel with others, even opening his home to those that needed a place to stay. More than anything, he loved being Grayson’s Big Daddy.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jackie; daughter, Patti Cowgill (David); grandson, Grayson; sister, Nettie Lee Leach; brother, Don Cole (Cler); brother in law, Bill Colston (Gerry); nieces and nephews, Laurie Cole Hoff (Greg), Janet Cole Morton (Bryan), Robert Cole (Heidi), John Cole (Beth), Angie Gibson Wyatt, Lydia Colston Killough (Steve) Robyn Colston Gunnells (Bill); and many other loving family members. He was predeceased by Ruby Ballard Cole, Iber Ligon Cole, Harold L. Cole, Herbert Cole, Mozelle Colston, Clifton Colston and Doris Colston Gibson (Bill).
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Neptune Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Bary officiating.

James Russell Johnson, 69, of Atlantic Beach, passed away January 12, 2019. He was born in Cairo, Ga. on December 28, 1949. He married Obbie Jeanne Pope on August 22, 1969. James retired from both the U.S. Army and the Deparment of Defense Police.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Russell, Obbie, Zack (Jen); grandchildren, Aiden, Emma, Ella, Garrett.
Committal service with military honors was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville.

Fland O’Kelly Sharp was a unique product of his time and place. Born in 1950 and raised in Jacksonville Beach, he became a quintessential elder of the community: Captain of the American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, two-time winner of the Meninak Ocean Marathon, sixteen years on the Jacksonville Beach City Council including two terms as Mayor, successful local businessman, lifelong surfer and sailing enthusiast. Both in and out of elected office, he was dedicated to preserving the special quality of life found only on “The Island.”
Fland travelled the world extensively including trips to Hong Kong and mainland China, the Philippines, Panama, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and, with his wife Brenda, to Ireland. Yet he always returned to Jax Beach to sew the lessons he had learned back into the fabric of this community. He was an astute analyst of local politics and issues and he endeavored to make the Beaches a more beautiful and progressive place.
Fland was the son of Felix C. (Flip) and Ollie (nee Murphy) Sharp, also long-time Beaches residents, and grew up in their home on the oceanfront at 34th Avenue South. He graduated from Fletcher High School in 1969 and attended the University of Florida. He leaves behind his loving wife, Brenda Barks; his aunt Bertha Sharp; and his cousins John Sharp, Susan Sharp, Jay Sharp, Pat Lane, Debbie Makhlouf, and their families.
A simple service for the scattering of Fland’s ashes will be held on February 2nd at 11:00 AM at the beach access on 34th Avenue South, Jacksonville Beach.

Ronald “Ron” Charles Wheeler, age 76, of Saint Johns, Florida passed away at Life Care Center of Jacksonville on January 3, 2019.  He was born May 9, 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Everett Charles Wheeler and Loree McNabb Wheeler. Ron was a life long resident of Duval and St. Johns Counties and graduated from Fletcher High School in 1960. After graduation Ron went on to earn his bachelor's degree and became a Teacher and Athletic Director at Fort Caroline Junior High. Ron was passionate about the youth he coached for 31 years before retiring in 2000. When not teaching Ron enjoyed traveling, playing golf and going to the beach. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and was known for his great sense of humor.
Ron is survived by his adoring wife of 46 years, Janice Lunsford Wheeler of Saint Johns, FL; daughter, Jennifer (Eduardo) Ponce of San Antonio, TX; sister, Linda (Jan) Wheeler Gorman of Gainesville, GA; granddaughter, Elena Ponce; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Ron's Life will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at First Christian Church of the Beaches at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Chris Hopkins officiating. John J. Batten Jr., of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019 at the age of 89 in the presence of family. John was a military veteran who served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Following his military service, he and his family relocated to West Islip, NY, where he worked in the post-war aerospace industry at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (BPI). For more than 20 years, John held various positions at BPI, ultimately operating their graduate school wind-tunnel laboratory in Farmingdale, Long Island. Following his tenure at BPI, John and his wife, Doris, relocated to Alexandria, VA where both assumed positions at Nobel Scientific, from which he retired.
In everything he pursued, John was known for the ability to strike up a conversation with whomever he came across. John was a devoted husband in a marriage that sustained 67 years. They were inseparable from their home life in Ponte Vedra Beach to their many family excursions and cruises around the world. He was also a devoted father, grandfather, and uncle who was committed to going above and beyond to provide for his family throughout his life. We will remember John as strong, empathetic, humble, curious, playful, and obsessively punctual.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; his four children, John (Sonia), Michael (Susan), Kathan (David) and Julia (Franklin); his six grandchildren; and many extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2019 in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home.

Vance Royce Collins “P-nut”, 62, of Jacksonville Beach, FL passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, January 17, 2019.
He was survived by his daughters Annelise McConnell (Patrick) and Melinda Collins, siblings Sharon Millspaugh, Dee Dee Zeilor (Kelli), and his twin Victor Collins, granddaughter Caitlin Patti (Sean), great-granddaughter Morella Patti, aunts, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Sandra Johnson, parents Jake and Naomi Collins, and grandparents Boyd and Mildred Watson.
His Celebration of Life was held at the American Legion Post 316 on Sunday, January 20, 2019.

Florence (Punksy) E. Drury, 77, went home to Heaven on December 31, 2018, and she is now filled with joy and peace in the paradise of God.
She was born on September 13, 1941 in Kinston, NC. A Kappa Delta from the Gamma Mu chapter (AOT) at Valdosta State University, Flo graduated in 1964 and began a life-long career in Elementary Education and Administration. After almost 40 years with the Duval County Public Schools, Flo retired in 2003 as a 1st grade teacher from Seabreeze Elementary School in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Known for her fun-loving spirit and laughter, Flo was passionate about teaching phonics and handwriting to empower young readers to have fun as they learn and grow.
Survived by her daughter, Jennifer Ann Fleetwood (Jonathan) and her grandchildren, Amanda and Connor; her sister, Mary Ann Wellmon (Jim) and nephew, Christopher.
A Celebration of Flo’s Life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1pm at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Fl 32073 with visitation beginning at Noon. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation to one of Flo’s favorite charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Aaron Cooper Jr. of Mayport passed away peacefully January 16, 2019 at Hospice.
Aaron was born in Sussex, NJ on October 26, 1942. He is proceeded in death by his parents, wife, 0ldest son and sisters.
He was known for being a commercial fisherman at Mayport. He enjoyed hunting and collecting scrap metal.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Aaron was given Catholic Rights at bedside and will be cremated and be returned to NJ. No service will be held.

Betty Tharp Stermon, was born June 21, 1928 to the late Gertrude Leona Cave and Bernard F. Davis in Pawnee, Illinois. She passed away January 11, 2019.
Surviving are three sons, Charles Kenneth, Jeffery Scott, Phillip Arthur, and also a son predeceased, George Franklin; namesake to her first husband, George Franklin Tharp Sr.
Betty was very proud to leave behind eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Betty was also a part time mother and influence to many of her four sons’ longtime friends growing up at the Beaches. She was very active for many years with The Beach United Methodist Church as well as many Director positions with the Junior Women’s Club. Betty was also very instrumental to the Jacksonville Beach Flag Pavilions success and implementation.
A private family service will be held.

Iris Caton Lees of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at age 84 on January 27, 2019. Iris was born on June 14,1934 in New Bern, NC, the eleventh of twelve children born to Lizzie and Noah Caton. She moved to Jacksonville in 1952.
Iris was proud of her 34 years of service at Prudential Insurance Co. She was always active in her church and community. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church choir, the Council of Catholic Women and Church Women United. Iris was a life member of the Jacksonville Beaches Woman’s Club, was a voting precinct manager; she served as a parliamentarian for many local organizations and volunteered at the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish tournament. She loved to travel; she was always a champion for her friends and family and loved to laugh.
Iris was preceded in death by her husband, John Lees; brothers, William Caton, Jack Caton, Edward Caton, Irving Caton, Joe Caton and Bobby Caton; and sisters, Mary Rowe, Emma Belangia, Nancy Martin and Vivian Godfree. She is survived by brother, Jesse Caton; daughter, Elizabeth Dallas; grandson, Michael Dallas; granddaughter-in-law, Theresa Dallas and beloved great granddaughter, Sophia Dallas. She is survived by a large group of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend her visitation and rosary on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2019 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church located at 224 5th Street North, Jacksonville Beach, FL with Reverend William Kelly as celebrant.

Thomas Scott McClure, 76, of Neptune Beach, FL passed away January 27th at his home. Scott was born December 3, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio and raised in several cities in Ohio, New Jersey and New York. He graduated from Linton High School, Schenectady, NY, and USN Electrician’s Mate Electrical School, Great lakes, IL. Scott served aboard USS Stribling (DD-867) and made his career in Shipboard Electrical systems retiring from SERMC Mayport in 2010.
He enjoyed football games, especially when the Ohio State Buckeyes were winning; he was a water skier and liked to cruise the waterways of North Florida with his boat and for exercise he jogged on the beach. Scott was a Life member of the American Legion and a Master Mason.
Family members include his wife, Rose Lee McClure; brother Michael J. McClure (Diane); sister Molly A. Anthony (Don); and a special little buddy next door Miss. Whitney Marie Wagner.
He was predeceased by his father Joseph F. McClure; mother Audrey E. McClure; step-mother Madeleine H. McClure; and brother John Robert “Jay” McClure.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1423 Eighth Avenue North, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.

Robert E. (Bob) Poland, 76, died at his home on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Angie's Subs, 1436 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville Beach, Florida on Saturday, February 9, 2019, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. to share stories, memories and laughter.

Hazel Singleton, age 83, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2019 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
She was born in Jacksonville on January 29, 1935. She married Russell Singleton in June 1951. They had 2 children, Robert and Kathy Singleton. She has one grandson, Sam Morgan.
Hazel was a gospel singer and prayer warrior for the Lord. She sang and played the piano in many churches across Jacksonville. She was always  praying and witnessing to people. She witnessed to a group of people in Mayport, Florida back in the 60’s. One of those men became a great missionary. She will be greatly missed.
A service is being held on February 16, 2019 at 2:00 at Mayport Presbyterian Church on Palmer St., Mayport, Florida. Food and refreshment served after the service.

Justyn McKay, 49, of Jacksonville Beach, passed away at home January 16, 2019 after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Justyn was born June 4, 1969 in San Diego, CA but grew up in Orange Park, FL, attending Orange Park High School. After losing both his mother and stepfather, Audree & Bill Ewing, to cancer at an early age, Justyn used his hard working nature and determination to make his way in the world. Justyn's love of cooking and self-taught culinary talents got him started in various jobs in the food industry. Justyn began his country club culinary career with Orange Park Country Club, followed by Jacksonville Golf & Country Club and eventually Glen Kernan Golf & Country Club, where he was an integral part of their set-up and opening in 2001. As Executive Chef there for the past 17 years, Justyn planned and prepared meals and events for valued members, many celebrities and influential people, including Senator John Glenn and Tim Tebow to name a few.
Besides his passion for cooking, Justyn loved the beach, fishing & shooting with his son, woodworking, playing cards, pool volleyball, attending Church of Eleven22, ski & cruise vacations, watching daughter’s volleyball matches, going to the gym, really ANY time doing anything with family.
Justyn is survived by his wife, Holly, the love of his life and best friend of 22+ years, his two treasured children - his pride & joy, daughter, Mia and son, Reece, his father: John Pollard (Felecia), half-brother, Keith McKay (Lisa), step-brother Andy Ewing (Kim), nephew/niece: Will & Natalie and all his beloved Ohio in-laws (although Justyn didn't refer to them as in-laws, as he loved them as his own): mother/father in-law: Anne & Don Nill, sister/brother in-law, Heather & Scott Parrott, adored niece/nephew: Samantha & Evan, Jason & Colleen Nill, precious nephew/nieces, Tyler, Alexa, & Natalie.
Justyn’s love of life was contagious with his incredible smile, laugh and sense of humor. Justyn will be greatly missed by his many friends, neighbors and co-workers whose displays of love & compassion made Justyn feel blessed during his struggle He maintained his faith and was a positive inspiration to others throughout. In lieu of flowers, Justyn would want you to put family and God 1st, making every day and minute count.
A celebration of his life will be held at a date/location TBA.
