John J. Batten Jr., of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019 at the age of 89 in the presence of family. John was a military veteran who served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Following his military service, he and his family relocated to West Islip, NY, where he worked in the post-war aerospace industry at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (BPI). For more than 20 years, John held various positions at BPI, ultimately operating their graduate school wind-tunnel laboratory in Farmingdale, Long Island. Following his tenure at BPI, John and his wife, Doris, relocated to Alexandria, VA where both assumed positions at Nobel Scientific, from which he retired.
In everything he pursued, John was known for the ability to strike up a conversation with whomever he came across. John was a devoted husband in a marriage that sustained 67 years. They were inseparable from their home life in Ponte Vedra Beach to their many family excursions and cruises around the world. He was also a devoted father, grandfather, and uncle who was committed to going above and beyond to provide for his family throughout his life. We will remember John as strong, empathetic, humble, curious, playful, and obsessively punctual.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; his four children, John (Sonia), Michael (Susan), Kathan (David) and Julia (Franklin); his six grandchildren; and many extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2019 in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home.
