Jean McCall Simonsen, 97, passed away peacefully Monday, September 10, 2018 at Fleet Landing Assisted Living in Atlantic Beach.
A memorial service will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 at Fleet Landing at 2:30. A reception for family & friends will be held afterwards. The interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Mrs Simonsen was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Capt Carl D. “Ike” Simonsen, son Mike Simonsen, sisters, June McGhee and Ellen Tell, and grandson Jeffrey Michael Pflug. Mrs. Simonsen is survived by her daughter, Sunny Pflug (Dale), grandchildren Kelly Golden (Richard), Shannon Spooneybarger (Jeff), Heather Denham (Sean), Garrett Simonsen (Rachel), Cari Simonsen, great-grandchildren Ashlee, Emily, and Blair Golden, Sarah, Hannah, and Josh Spooneybarger, and Stephen, Seth, and Savannah Denham, and nieces Molly Blasko (who was a special friend and caregiver for many years) (Dennis), Mary Hancock (Sam), and nephew Dr. James C. McGhee.
Jean was a lifelong member of Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach. She was a devoted, patriotic Navy wife—moving with her husband and family 20 times. She was a special mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, skilled bridge player, gardener, and gourmet cook. She was always ready to volunteer—with the Red Cross (in Pensacola, Washington D.C., Japan, Italy, and Jacksonville), Navy Relief, Meals on Wheels, church committees, and desk at Fleet Landing Nurses Station. Jean & Ike were the primary founders of Fleet Landing Retirement Community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 3rd St. S., Jacksonville Beach, Fl. 32250 or St. Jude’s Children's Hospital, 5901 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, Ga. 30328. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL.
