BEVERLY L. JOHNSON

Beverly L. Johnson, age 84 formerly of Gainesville, Florida passed away Friday, January 26, 2018.
Mrs. Johnson was born on February 24, 1933 in Mishawaka, Indiana. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1951 and later received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She married John S. Johnson in 1958.
Mrs. Johnson taught in the Mishawaka Schools for 23 years.  She served as an elementary principal at Twin Branch for 10 years and also taught at Battell and Mary Phillips. While at Battell, she helped develop the Elementary Guidance Program for the state of Indiana. She worked with thirteen interns and was president of the Association of Childhood Education and the Young Women’s Club.
Mrs. Johnson moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1978. She and her husband John resumed their teaching careers at Lafayette Elementary School in Mayo, Florida for an additional 16 years.  She received the Master Teacher Award from the state of Florida. Mrs. Johnson worked in education for 39 years.
She was the daughter of Paul and Lulu Hoover. She also had two brothers, Robert F. Hoover and Norman L Hoover who both passed away in Florida prior to her death. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mishawaka.
After retiring from teaching, Beverly helped her husband, John, teach senior citizen line dancing in Gainesville, Florida for 14 years. In 2008, they moved to Fleet Landing, a CCRC in Atlantic Beach, Florida. In 2013 she developed vascular dementia and lived at Fleet Landing’s Skilled Nursing Memory Care Unit until her death.
Johnson Hall at Fleet Landing was named after John and Beverly Johnson. The Johnson’s were also honored by Ball State University on the 10th floor of the Teacher’s collage.  The John S. and Beverly L. Hoover Johnson Executive Seminar Room was named for them.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years.
